A critical survey of selected major figures in the history of Western philosophy, from Plato to Popper by concentrating on their ideas and arguments.
PP 5106 HISTORY OF INDIAN THOUGHT
A critical survey of various themes of Indian thought, including both Astika and Nastika with the emphasis on the concepts of Atman, Brahman, Maya, Karma, Dharma, Samsaravatta and Moksha, theory of knowledge, and ethics.
PP 5107 HISTORY OF CHINESE THOUGHT
A critical survey of Chinese thought from the ancient period to the present time with the emphasis on the ideas of Confucius, Lao Zi, Sun Zi, Zhuang Zi, Han Fei Zi, Neo Confucianism, Neo-Taoism, Mao Ze Tung and others.
PP 5505 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A study of the structure of a philosophical/religious research with the emphasis on both theory and practice. All steps of writing a research including argumentation, composing, strategies and tactics for writing, and the ways to read and criticize a philosopher/religious scholar are included.
PP 6202 PROCESS STUDIES
A seminar in basic ideas and principal categories of process thought about God, nature as a whole, persons and things. Discussion of the ideas of selected major figures from Heraclitus to Whitehead and Hartshorne in comparison with the Buddhist doctrines.
PP 6205 PHILOSOPHY OF CULTURE AND HUMAN NATURE
A study of the comparison and contrast of ideas from Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Nietzsche and other scholars on contrastive themes such as nature and convention, determinism and freedom, solitude and community, individuals and states, the moral and the legal, traditions and human beings.
PP 6303 HERMENEUTICS
A study of the understanding and interpretation of meaning, historical and critical analysis of the theory of interpretation from regional hermeneutics to post-critical hermeneutics and reader-response theory.
PP 6405 PHILOSOPHY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE
A study of the nature of the social science with the emphasis on the epistemic status of theories in the social science and the understanding of the relationship between self and others based on multiculturalism.
PP 7201 SEMINAR IN METAPHYSICS
Discussion of the nature of metaphysical thinking, the task of metaphysics, the concepts of being and becoming, the concepts of essence and existence, the concepts of matter and form, the concepts of substance and accident, the problem of free will and determinism, the existence of God and the problem of evil, the concepts of universal and particular, the critique of Western tradition by Martin Heidegger, Buddha and the metaphysical problems.
PP 7202 SEMINAR IN EPISTEMOLOGY
Discussion of the nature of knowledge, the origin of knowledge, belief, the theory of truth, the theory of justification, normative epistemology, epistemology naturalized, the critique of epistemology by John Dewey and Richard Rorty.
PP 7403 SEMINAR IN ETHICS
Discussion of classical and contemporary theories of moral conduct with the emphasis on the justification of moral judgments based on principles, virtues, and ideals of the good human life including the study of Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
PP 7404 SEMINAR IN SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Discussion of contemporary social problems with the emphasis on natural right in Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau, power and political life, privacy and publicness, freedom and equality, love and justice, nature and convention, morality and law, action and responsibility. And Confucius and Han Fei.
PP 8001 BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY
A critical discussion of various Buddhist philosophical concepts covering metaphysical, epistemological and ethical areas such as the concepts of Anatta/Tathata, Nibbana/ Nirvana and the Middle Way, etc. in different schools of both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism in India and other countries. Students will be given an opportunity to present and discuss their assignments and term-papers in class as individuals and as a group.
PP 8002 CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY
Discussion of the task and place of philosophy in Christianity with the emphasis on the relationship between faith and reason, the work of Augustine, Anselm and Aquinas, ethics and the theological virtues, exegesis and hermeneutics.
PP 8005 CHINESE PHILOSOPHY
A seminar in Chinese philosophy from the ancient period to the present time with the emphasis on the philosophies of Confucius, Lao Zi, Sun Zi, Zhuang Zi, Han Fei Zi, Neo-Confucianism, Neo-Taoism, and Mao Ze Tung.
PP 8006 JAPANESE PHILOSOPHY
A critical study of the origin and development of Japanese philosophy from the beginning to the present with special reference to the period of Nara until the Meji Dynasty in connection with the Mahayana Buddhist philosophical schools such as Kusha, Sanron, Tendai, Shingon, and Jodo in comparison to Shintoism and Zen Buddhism.

A general survey of the twentieth –century philosophical movements as pragmatism, linguistics, logical positivism, process philosophy, phenomenology, existentialism, poststructuralism, and feminism.

A critical study of classical and contemporary texts relevant to philosophical thought with the emphasis on values, principles, virtues and ideals of the good human life in Thai society.

An inquiry into the work of a group of French writers, especially Foucault and Derrida, and their adherents with the emphasis on its developments and challenges to Western civilization as ideology critique.

An inquiry into the origin and scope of aesthetics in historical context from ancient aesthetics to modern with the emphasis on aesthetic polarity, the origin of the work of art, art, expression and symbol, aesthetic judgment, beauty, sublimity and ugliness.

A critical study of the nature of Humanism with the emphasis on its origin and development in the historical context.
